Find the Humor October 28 2015, 0 Comments

Well it has been a very busy few weeks trying to create some new products for my online shop. I had taken the summer off and spent time at camp while my house was being renovated. It was a beautiful summer weather wise and I spent 3 months relaxing. Don't feel bad for me ha ha.... I really had no choice but to relax and enjoy my much needed time off with the home renovations after all. Oh so hard to take!!!  Now it is time to scurry and get things done for the holiday season. I have been spending time making a variety of new signs which I will be posting soon. I did however post a few signs that have a quirky sense of humor about them. Of course I headed to the graphics fairy website where I knew I would find exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for these great images there is never a shortage of ideas to create new projects. Hope you enjoy these new signs.

I do have a variety including personalized options on some. Check out my catalogue and see if there is a sign that works for you. Normally I take a break for the summer from custom orders although I will continue with these as they keep me busy at the cottage!

COTTAGE BEDROOM SET TRANSFORMATION May 22 2015, 0 Comments

Recently a friend asked if I would refinish a bedroom set for her family cottage on beautiful Manitoulin Island. For all that are not familiar with Manitoulin Island I am very fortunate to live 2 hours away from the largest fresh water Island in the world.

The furniture belongs to her Mother and it had great sentimental value so she opted to freshen it up rather then get rid of it.

An aqua colored chalk paint was chosen and for inside the drawers a light clay.I loved the detailing on both the mirror and headboard and decided to do some color layering and dark waxing in these areas. A mixture of dark glazing and waxes were used as well on all pieces.

When it was time to work on the headboard which had 3 indented square areas I had a few ideas in mind.  I know I was just asked to simply paint the piece but I really felt it needed some contrast.  I found a piece of fabric that had an off white background and a pretty bird pattern and I had been itching to use it on something. I felt that this was the perfect piece and after consulting with the family we agreed to go ahead.  Yeah......I was very excited and couldn't wait for the end result.

Now for the BEFORE and AFTER photos which are a bit disappointing due to my lack of photography knowledge. Definitely not my thing! As you can see the color of the finished dresser is lighter then the actual color. However if you view the headboard that is the color all my photos should have been. At least this time I remembered to take before pictures of most of the items (forgot the mirror) and left the drawers out.

TOP OF MIRROR

What do you think of the transformation? Hope Mrs. R likes it! I know I enjoyed this project.

CRATE TUTORIAL April 29 2015, 0 Comments

I am hooked on finishing crates lately. I love the rustic look and using stain and other paint techniques to give the crate an aged appearance. Of course the images over at the Graphics Fairy website are always a hit in making crafting so much more fun!

First a picture of the crate BEFORE along with some finished crates.First step is getting yourself organized. I had 6 crates and wanted a different look on each. I chose my images over at the graphics fairy then photo copied each on my laser printer.  Of course you want to be sure any images with script be mirror imaged or you will land up with a bunch of backwards mumbo jumbo!! Trust me I have forgotten and made that mistake before.

STEP #2   For this project I chose a dark stain. I used a paint brush and rag to brush and rub the stain into the entire crate. I like to leave more stain in certain areas and less in others until I get the aged look I am happy with.

STEP #3  Choosing my images. This crate is my favorite. I loved the 2 images and thought they worked well together on my crate

.STEP #4 The first image was taped down onto the crate where I used my blender pen and old library card to transfer and burnish the image onto the crate. The Lord Calvert Coffee can image I mod podged onto some cardboard then attached to the side of the crate with raffia.  See EASY PEASY you now have some fun rustic storage.

MORE PICTURES

I also decided to paint  the sides of some of the crates with some useful ideas. MORE PICS

THE END! Thanks for viewing.

Rustic Signs & Decor April 23 2015, 0 Comments

With cottage season quickly upon us I have been keeping myself busy creating signs and décor for the cottage. Some of the signs have been created using reclaimed barn wood, while some of the others I repurposed some cabinet doors. Here is a sneak peek of what I will be listing for sale in a few days. Please check in often as other projects will be also available soon.

REVAMPED CUPBOARD DOOR March 29 2015, 0 Comments

Ok so I wanted a quick and easy project to do this weekend and after having my 2 beautiful granddaughters over the other day I had girlie décor on the brain. I have a variety of cupboard doors and decided I should revamp one as wall art. I had this really pretty paint color (peru) which is a beautiful deep pink. I mixed up a batch of chalk style paint and painted the entire cupboard 2 coats. I felt the paint needed a bit more depth and texture so I dry brushed white craft paint here and there until I was happy with the color. I traced the words PARIS on the top and bottom frame as well tried my best to free hand 2 dress forms on the sides and a few swirls on each corner.

Normally I would have taken more time and traced and painted the image but I was looking for a QUICK weekend project!  I found some solid pink scrapbook paper in my stock and decided to print this very popular and amazing GRAPHIC'S FAIRY IMAGE and decoupage the paper onto the door instead. (unfortunately I cut off the bottom scrolls as I couldn't fit the entire image).

To finish off this project I gave the entire door a coat of clear wax and acrylic sealant for added durability.

THE BEFORE PICTURE OF THE DOOR IS NOT THE EXACT DOOR ALTHOUGH SIMILAR. AS ALWAYS I SO OFTEN FORGET TO SNAP THAT BEFORE PICTURE.

AMAZING the things you can create with a vintage cupboard door!

Newest Project January 21 2015, 0 Comments

I had picked up this little wooden jug/recipe book holder awhile ago but had no idea what I was going to do with it. While on my daily visit to the Graphics Fairy website I came across the perfect image. The image was of an ironstone pitcher which looked exactly like my thrift store find. I absolutely loved the vintage antique crockery shop advertisement and new it would be perfect!  I painted the pitcher in an apple green and the bottom black chalkboard paint. I then printed the image, traced it, then painted it on and voila here is the finished product.

Painted Wine Bottles December 26 2014, 3 Comments

I love painting and decorating wine bottles although this set in particular I feel may have a story behind the images. I found these images on the Graphics Fairy website and felt I needed to use them together some how. I painted the bottles with a clay colored home made style chalk paint and them glazed the entire bottle and image with a walnut glaze then sealed them with an acrylic spray. I used embellishments and twine to decorate them. It looks as though these young boys have given the girls flowers and a note. A vintage Victorian young love story!

Re purposed Chair Projects July 04 2014, 0 Comments

Vintage chairs have been overtaking my shed lately so I have decided to re purpose each in there own individual themes. This time of year in Sudbury, Ontario the weather is beautiful and I love camping, fishing and all those great outdoor activities. So many families in Northern Ontario  have camps (cottages). Cottage furniture, especially entrance chairs can be very inviting.  Here are a few pictures of the chairs I have finished thus far. Gone Fishing Chair along with the TIME 2 FISH themed chair have graphics found on the Graphics Fairy site which of course I visit daily! I found a great selection of scrap book paper at Linda's photography in Lively, Ontario. Re purposed chairs along with other cottage pieces will be sold by Kimber Creations at the Walden Craft Show in the Fall. Hope to see you all there!

AMAZING CURB SIDE RESCUE !!! June 30 2014, 0 Comments

I also have to Thank a ton of people in Copper Cliff for thinking of me and sending fb messages to let me know that this organ had not been picked up yet.  With so many knowing it was still on the curb I figure the only reason no one else picked it up is the fact that it was so darn heavy. Guess it took my adrenaline and determination and of course by awesome husband and good sport Joey for getting it up my stairs.  I am sure Joey will never answer his phone again when we call. lol...Thanks again, Joe Joe

Repurposed table featured on the Graphics Fairy June 18 2014, 0 Comments

Repurposed WANTED table was so much fun to create!  I decided what the heck why not submit my project to Karen, the Graphics Fairy. I enjoyed doing this piece so much that I WANTED the opinion of the graphic artist herself, after all it was her wonderful Western image that I transferred onto my table top. I do however realize that she receives many submissions on a daily basis so when she decided to feature this Sudbury, Ontario girls repurposed furniture piece on Friday the 13th...YIKES!!!!  What more can I say I was extremely appreciative, excited and guess what...I am no longer feeling that Friday the 13th is BAD LUCK!  Please check it out on the Graphic Fairy's website the graphics fairy.com

WANTED My repurposed Mothers Day Project May 11 2014, 0 Comments

Happy Mothers Day to all the well deserving Moms out there.  Hope everyone had a very special day.

I did take time out to go hiking and have a picnic with my husband and boys.  What a beautiful and fun Mothers Day it turned out to be.

I was however itching to get started on a hand crafted wood table that I picked up at a garage sale here in Sudbury, Ontario.  I have had the table for a few weeks now and had in mind that I wanted to do some type of old western theme.  I absolutely love the graphics fairy's site and appreciate the wonderful free images she has to offer. So a few weeks ago I began rummaging through her images and was unable to find what I had in mind.  However I do frequently check to see all the new graphics released and was so very excited the other day when the perfect picture of a horse and cowboy holding a sign was one of the new releases.

This small table was painted black and the top stained when I picked it up at the garage sale.  I thought I would work with what I had seeing as I would have painted a black base coat anyhow.  I had a cactus color in my supply of chalk paint.  I started dry brushing the table top with this color and liked the idea of seeing some rustic barn type wood showing through.  I then used black paint on a small dry brush and kept blotting off most of the paint in order to paint on the word WANTED.  I wanted a WANTED poster look.  I then used this fun western graphics fairy image and transferred the image using citrasolv. I wanted the image to look worn and faded but it actually turned out a bit to light.  I then used a dry brush with very little black paint to darken the image wiping and blending the paint in.

I loved that I was able to fill in the poster this fun loving cowboy was riding away with and stuck with the fugitive on the run by adding REWARD $5,000 in gold coin.

The table top was exactly what I had envisioned although the rest of it needed something more.  I then painted the rest of the table with my cactus green chalk paint....love the color.  Still I felt it needed more work to give it that Western feel.  I began digging through my piles and piles of scrap book paper and came across this scrap book map with places such as Colorado, South Dakota and the pale yellow background of the paper also went so well with the cactus paint on the table. I took out my modge podge and starting putting the paper on the sides of the table and the drawer front.  Table began to look better but it still needed that  finishing touch so I got out a few old worn out leather belts, cut them up and used 2 pieces to trim each side of my map on the sides of the table. I found another piece of scrap book paper in a checkered pattern to line the inside of the drawer.  I then decided to use the tip of another leather belt and its rustic looking buckle as a drawer pull and VOILA my table finally met my approval!

Chalk paint Disaster April 13 2014, 1 Comment

So the weekend is here and I am all pumped up to get working on a few accent tables that have been sitting around waiting for my attention. I have tried Annie Sloan's chalk paint and it is amazing! Although I decided with all the chalk paint recipes circulating and all the paint I have sitting in my storage I would mix up a few of my own colors. To my understanding you should be able to apply chalk paint to furniture without priming.  I had this nice maple accent table and decided to get started so I gave the piece a cleaning and began to apply my homemade chalk paint.  I mixed a 1/2 cup of plaster of paris with a 1/2 cup of hot water and mixed until smooth.  Next I added 1 1/2 cups of a nice antique white latex paint by Behr.  After stirring very well I began to apply the paint.  It took 2 good coats but the paint looked great. When all was done I decided to do my finger nail test and low and behold it easily scratched off.  I was disappointed but decided to line up 2 more tables.  This time I decided I would give them a quick scuff with steel wool then prime with an oil based primer, then apply my chalk paint.  I waited 24 hours then very hesitantly ran my nail across one of the tables.  Don't know where I am going wrong but again they scratched.  If anyone has any advice for me I would be glad to hear from you as to where I am going wrong.

Repurposed Garden Chair December 06 2013, 0 Comments

Last night I was anxious to get started on repurposing an old wood chair.  I was tired of the aqua, turquoise and silvers that I had been using in many of my projects and needed a change.  I thought a nice sunny yellow would look great in a garden.  Must have been all the snow and freezing rain that had me thinking of summer projects.  I headed out to our local Lowes store here in Sudbury Ontario Canada. I found a very nice antique yellow by Valspar which I thought would be perfect.  After all the priming and painting I decided to paint a bright orange and purple floral design.  I then began to mix a dark glaze and began to paint into some of the chairs joints and natural cracks.  I don't like to repair all of the cracks as I feel it keeps in the character of an older piece of furniture.  I didn't want any drastic change in the color so I did just a little glazing.  I absolutely love how this chair turned out.  I will be posting pictures this weekend!

Hope everyone out there does something fun this weekend!

Found 4 vintage tables today at a garage sale in Sudbury Ontario.  There seems to be a lot of interest in repurposing these tables as a cozy bed for your pet.  I have already repurposed 1 hexagon table in pewter with a chalkboard top.  The edge has cute little paw prints.  This table is already on my website and would be a great table to sit and have coffee, jot down your to do list or your pets routine. All while your sweet little pooch or cat have a rest!

I best get busy as I have had a request to do a pet bed in plaid.  Thank goodness it doesn't have to be done until after the holiday season.  Although if I could get it done sooner this animal lover will have a festive pet bed under their tree!

Have a fantastic rest of your day!

Furniture Finds November 27 2013, 0 Comments

Well yesterday was a great morning.  I had gone to pick up a few chairs in the Greater Sudbury area which I had found on kijiji.  I had just been complaining about the lack of thrift store and garage sale finds at this time of the year. When the gentlemen opened his garage door I thought I was in repurposed furniture heaven!

Furniture finds galore!  The man was an auctioneer and had a ton of great furniture ready for redo.  Picked up my chairs and a few other great pieces of tattered furniture and came home to start planning.

Happy Days All!

Repurposing Vintage Wood Chairs November 24 2013, 0 Comments

Good morning!  Started my Sunday morning with a 7am hockey game.  I love those early morning games although it sure was hard to step outdoors with a -27 wind chill.

Found a few vintage wood chairs at a thrift store here in Sudbury so I have decided to work on those today.  I already can't wait for those yard sales to start back up in the spring.  Seems not many thrift store finds available at this time of the year. Many ideas for those vintage chairs although I wish I had a few more.  If anyone local is looking to clean out  there house please give me a call. Remember one mans junk is another mans treasure!  Help our environment and repurpose......

Here are a couple of before pictures of my vintage finds..

Stay warm and have a relaxing Sunday!

Repurpose Me! November 18 2013, 0 Comments

Lots of ideas keeping me awake in this windy city of Sudbury Ontario last night.  Looking outside I could see my shed doors full of my vintage finds blow wide open.  Believe me I was not going outside at 3am.

Repurpose me!  I could hear these pieces blowing around screaming ideas out at me. What should I do next?  Should it be that old table that I rescued from the curb awhile back?  So many end tables needing to be revived or perhaps that ratty old dresser which still had some young mans homework stuck in the back drawer from 1945.

Repurposed dresser in a silver metallic paint with a touch of bling.  Hope this young man won't mind seeing his very masculine dresser being transformed into a dresser fit for a princess.

Time to take out my magic wand and get to work.

Hold on to your hats and have a great Monday!

Chalkboards from the New Girl on the Blog! November 16 2013, 0 Comments

Chalkboard orders have been keeping this Copper Cliff Ontario girl very busy.  Many Sudbury and Northern Ontario shoppers ordering Christmas gifts.  Custom chalkboards seem to be a hot item this year.  So far I am working on Fairy and Princess themed chalkboards, a hockey theme, cars, a wine and cheese for a New Years party and one just ready for a restaurant menu chalkboard. Enough blogging for today need to get busy!  I will be having chalkboard dreams tonight.

Wishing everyone a fun filled weekend from the New Girl on the Blog!

Ready to Go! November 07 2013, 0 Comments

Well it is 3:30am here  in Sudbury Ontario Canada and I am awake and ready to go!  Repurposing furniture and creating chalkboards  in the very early hours is when I do my best work..  Lots of energy!  I have been working on a 4 piece entrance set .  Found a great table at a thrift store in Sudbury, Ontario.  So far I have three of the pieces almost ready.  The fourth is a rather tall cabinet that just may take me sometime.  I can't wait until I am finished so I can post all four pieces.  So far they are looking great.  I may just want to keep them for my own house!  Wishing everyone a day full of happiness!

Great day to work indoors! October 26 2013, 0 Comments

Good morning everyone!  Very cold and raining this morning, a great day for working indoors here in Northern Ontario..  I have decided to be a pajama mama today and work in comfort.  I just love dreary days, hot coffee in one hand and paint brush in the other. Hope everyone is following their dreams and doing what they love to do!
